Leon Gast, director of the Oscar-winning documentary When We Were Kings (1996), said of his experience producing the film: “In my career, I spent five days with the Grateful Dead, I travelled with the Hells Angels, and I went to Folsom Prison [for Johnny Cash’s concerts in 1968]. But ‘The Rumble in the Jungle’ topped them all. I built a relationship and a rapport with Muhammad Ali and I could never top that experience.”
